Dancing with uncertainty as preparedness.

In WHITEOUT, you are drawn into a darkness and into a confrontation with nagging feelings – uneasiness. You are gradually exposed to a strange white light and a condition known as ‘whiteout’. This condition describes a dramatic reduction in visibility: When you can see nothing but snow, and the usual points of reference have disappeared.
Can our collective blindness to the climate crisis be described as ‘whiteout’?
Three dancers are stuck in a dead end. Together, the audience and the dancers experience a shared, exhausting condition in which they see ambiguous sights. Are you actually seeing something that is not really there – hallucinations or mirages – or are you so saturated by observing that you are falling into a different state? What is it like to face uncertainty together, and what does this experience create?
WHITEOUT is the second production in a trilogy that examines various aspects of affect, and is an extension of Hytten’s 2022 master’s thesis in human geography. This part illustrates the potential of a nagging or sticky affect, and embraces what we do not know and what we cannot know. Through aesthetic reflections, we can prepare ourselves, and try to get involved in deciding what the future will be like.
