Solaris? is an outdoor walking performance through the forest, in which the audience is invited to make an imaginary voyage out into space to meet an unknown form of consciousness. Inspired by Stanisław Lems’ novel Solaris (1961), the production examines the relationship between humans and nature, and how our anthropocentric interpretation of reality influences the way we react to the non-human and unfamiliar. 

A guide leads the audience on a walk through the forest, using text, movement and installation art by Lawrence Malstaff to trigger the audience’s imaginations. The audience gets to wear specially designed goggles by visual artist Hans Christian Gilje, which filter sensory impressions and transform the forest into an alien, almost extra-terrestrial landscape. The forest becomes the surface of the alien planet Solaris, and one by one, the guide encounters a series of unfamiliar restrictions. The walk through the forest becomes an imaginary journey on which memories, meaning, truths and untruths are reconstructed and deconstructed. There may also be song, both comforting and deceptive.

The production combines elements of dance, sound art and interactive installation, creating a reflective space where the audience is not simply an observer, but an active participant in a dialogue between body, technology and nature.
